We want to let you know about an important opportunity to share your views on the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Reform National Conversation that the Department for Education have informed us about today.
What is it?
The government is asking families, teachers and children to share their ideas and experiences to help shape the future of SEND support. This is called the SEND National Conversation.
How can you get involved?
The Department for Education is running 5 online events, which are open to everyone, to help build a better system for SEND. The government wants to listen to your views, understand your experiences and hear any suggestions you have to create a stronger offer for children with SEND. It may be useful to think about: What helps your child the most? What improvements could be made? What issues have you faced (e.g. assessment, transport, referral wait times)?
The events are split into 5 key areas:
-
Early intervention: helping children early so they get the support as soon as they need it.
-
Better local provision: good support close to home for mainstream and specialists.
-
Fairness: ending the need for families to ‘fight’ for provision and strengthen safeguards.
-
Effective practice: better training and resources for children to have better outcomes.
-
Joined-up working: families, schools and health services working together to support the child.
How will this help?
The feedback from the events will help the government create their new plan. This will outline proposed changes to the SEND system.
